The future of 14 Sussex workers is uncertain after a machine-making company announced it was relocating a factory to Italy.
Goring Kerr, which makes and designs product-weighing machines in Shoreham, is moving the operation to a plant in Parma.
No announcement has been made about the 14 employees.
A company spokesman said: "We are in talks at the moment. We have other factories in the UK so it is not certain what is going to happen.
"The move is taking place because we are aiming to strengthen our customer focus at what is a time of growing globalisation."
Goring Kerr deals internationally in X-ray and check weighing machines.
The spokesman added: "We are setting new worldwide standards. We can become a more fully integrated company, which will allow us to underpin our pacemaking role in the industry."
