A hospitals trust has been given £200,000 to provide extra services over the winter.

Worthing and Southlands Hospitals NHS Trust will use the money to pay for six projects.

These include Sunday operating sessions, an extra doctor in the admissions ward and an occupational therapist for the accident and emergency unit.

There are also plans to form joint health and social services projects which will allow some patients to be treated at home.

Last winter an average of 55 patients were admitted daily, 15 more than at other times of the year.

Rosemary Cranna, matron at Worthing Hospital, said: "Every winter we are stretched to the limit and last year the flu epidemic created even more problems.

"This is the biggest investment of winter pressures money we have ever had. Hopefully it will be sufficient to ensure our patients get the best treatment possible."
