The anonymous correspondent who describes motorists as "a bunch of hypocrites" (Opinion, September 28) fails to take into account a number of important points.

Unlike the French, our protesters did not blockade ports or in any way interfere with people going about their business. Tanker drivers were free to cross the picket lines.

We all know taxes have to be raised. However, why should the burden be imposed on motorists? Petrol is cheaper on the continent because governments there are more open and honest, taxing at source rather than by stealth.

British industry cannot compete unless it is given a level playing field.

During the Labour Party Conference, Tony Blair stated he could not and would not give in to demonstrations. Is this the same man who went running for cover the minute the Countryside Alliance made its first demonstration?
