American giant General Motors could make a bid for troubled car maker Daewoo as soon as tomorrow, sources at the Korean firm said today.

GM is understood to have approached the company, although no formal takeover offer has yet been made.

Daewoo said a bid would be "great news" as it would secure the future of the company and mean 750 staff at Daewoo's technical centre in Worthing would finally receive their salaries.

According to Daewoo, GM has said it plans to make a bid for the company.

It has been rumoured the bid could be made in alliance with Fiat.

Staff at Worthing were told last month that the company could not afford to pay them on time.

In August the car maker said it was cutting 113 jobs at the Worthing site to cut costs.

The firm warned last week that it would need a £287 million cash injection to continue operations to the end of this year.

In September rival US car maker Ford withdrew a £5 billion bid to take on the company.
