Councillors have vowed to investigate a string of complaints about the condition of a leisure centre.

A number of residents have complained that standards are falling at the Sovereign Centre in Eastbourne.

Most of the complaints centre on the cleanliness of the centre, which has four swimming pools and a gym.

Users of the centre, run by Eastbourne Borough Council, have written to councillors to report finding used condoms and sanitary products in the changing rooms.

Others complained that offensive graffiti was daubed on the walls and some people claim possessions have been stolen from the changing rooms.

Councillors are tonight expected to ask for a task group to be set up to investigate the problems.

Coun Ron Parsons said the strength of feeling among the public required action.

He said: "There have been a number of complaints made to me and my fellow councillors indicating that standards of cleanliness at the centre have been deteriorating.

"We are hoping this is not a major problem and can be sorted out, but I think a task group should be set up to look at the issue.

"As yet, we don't know where the root of the problem lies, which is why we're calling for an investigation."

But other members of the council deny there are major problems at the centre.

Barbara Goodall, Cabinet leisure spokeswoman, said: "I shall be making a full statement at the council tonight in response to these concerns.

"I have looked at the facts and figures and in my opinion the evidence supports the optimum service the Sovereign Centre provides."
