Angry Albion fans are demanding a Football League inquiry into their treatment at Hull on Friday night, when more than 1,000 were crammed into an area meant for 300.

Many claimed they were crushed and could have been seriously injured after being packed into a small section of the Boothferry Park ground.

Keen fans delighted at Albion's climb towards the top of Division Three made a 500-mile round trip from Sussex to see their team win 2-0.

The game, which saw Albion go third, was brought forward to avoid a clash with Saturday's England v Germany match.

But some Brighton fans were angry that Hull City closed the away section of the ground and crammed the Albion supporters into a small section near the Hull fans.

Paul Blann, 38, who travelled to the game from Bradford, said: "In my opinion someone could have got seriously hurt. Stewards showed little understanding of the problems and offered little assistance.

"We asked for the North Stand to be opened, where Albion fans have previously been on other visits, but our requests were ignored."

Another northern Albion supporter, Phil Back, 48, of Bridlington, Yorkshire, said: "One simple phone call to the club would have told Hull City how many fans were expected to travel.

"There were a number of children who could have been quite seriously injured."

Les Motherby, editor of the Hull City fanzine Amber Nectar, said: "I have heard countless complaints about the standards of stewardship at the ground. We, as true supporters of Hull City, can only apologise to the Brighton fans."

Complaints from the fans have yet to reach to reach Albion and Hull City Football Clubs on a large scale.

Both clubs said they were unaware of a huge number of problems.

Sid Pittman of Paynes Avenue, Hove, complained to the Argus: "In all the years I have supported football at league and international levels, I trust I shall not witness another evening like it.

"Hull City clearly have to look at themselves and their arrangements. I trust their own travelling supporters are not subjected to such behaviour."

Andy Dakin, Hull's commercial manager, said Friday's game was being discussed today. He added: "We are unaware of any incidents at this stage."
