Two companies from Sussex have triumphed at a national internet awards ceremony.

Brighton-based Kerb was declared the best design agency in the country and Crawley-based StreetsOnline the best consumer retailer.

Comedian Mark Lamarr presented the awards before 500 members of the internet elite at the Natural History Museum in central London.

Kerb managing director Jim McNiven said: "We're totally buzzed about the award.

"It's good to see all the insanity we design down in Brighton is so well respected by the general public."

Kerb beat industry giants Pres.co and Agency.com to win the award.

StreetsOnline founder and managing director Steve Cole said: "We could not be happier.

"Our hard work is really paying off and we can afford to be very proud of ourselves."

Mr Cole's firm beat Iceland's website, YBag and OneSwoop to the title.

Members of the public voted for nominees on a website run by Future Publishing, the firm behind the awards.

The final decisions were made by a panel including Elisabeth Murdoch and John Pluthero, head of the internet company Freeserve.

easyGroup won the e-company of the year award and Napster, so feared by the recording industry because it enables users to download free music, was dubbed web innovation of the year.

Channel 4 phenomenon Big Brother won best entertainment site honours with Ask Jeeves scooping the best portal title.

Future Publishing's Nathan Berkley said: "The overwhelming number and high standard of nominations received, not to mention the enthusiasm of those shortlisted, have gone a long way to making the awards a success."
