More than 20,000 people lined the roads for a torchlit procession to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.
They witnessed a dazzling display as Hastings Bonfire Society members, dressed in colourful costumes, carried burning torches through the streets.
The procession ended with a bonfire on the beach and fireworks display, including the traditional burning of an effigy.
This year's theme was the police and the recently introduced ban on street drinking in the town centre.
The huge effigy, built by Pete Tompsett, was set ablaze and destroyed within minutes. A figure in the shape of a policeman exploded in a shower of fireworks.
The event marked the end of Hastings Week, held to celebrate the anniversary of the famous battle of 1066.
