Far be it for me to rise to the defence of Adam Trimingham regarding his article on pensions; he is well able to look after himself. However, the Government's approach, albeit unpopular, does make long-term economic sense.
It also makes short-term moral sense in seeking to help those most in need. Today, the minimum weekly income guaranteed for pensioners is £79.
Pensioners also qualify for rent and community charge allowance, receive £150 fuel allowance and the over 75s get a free £100 TV licence.
