I note bus operator Arriva has won a national award for providing accessible public transport for people with disabilities. In achieving top place, Arriva was also acknowledged for its driver awareness training.
It would be wonderful if Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company had the same attitude. Many bus passengers are frail, elderly and/or disabled, but if my recent experiences are anything to go by, there are only a very few drivers in Brighton willing to make allowances for people who have difficulty climbing the steep steps on many buses.
Three times in the past week I have tried to hail buses within 20 yards of a stop, only to see the driver close the doors and look away. On the odd occasion I get a considerate driver, I make a point of praising him or her to show just how grateful I am someone has bothered to allow for the fact I am not as able-bodied as most passengers. I hope Arriva's award will be noted by our bus company.
