Brighton Bears experienced centre Wilbur Johnson is optimistic his team can build on recent improvements when they visit Derby Storm tomorrow.

Bears gained their first win of the season with a 93-91 success at Edinburgh after double overtime, before being just edged out 74-72 by Manchester last Saturday and Johnson is certain they will continue to get better.

A total of 23 turnovers proved costly for Bears against Manchester and Johnson says they must work to cut them down whilst striving to put together a 40 minute game.

He said: "We got a small dose of encouragement by getting our first win and now we've got to try and beat Derby.

"We're a young team. We didn't have many pre-season games and not a lot of time to gell. I think we're just starting to do that now.

"The league better watch out. I'm not saying we're going to win it but we're going to play teams hard."

Like Bears, Derby have struggled early on and, after three successive league defeats, their first win came last weekend when they knocked Edinburgh out of the National Cup 86-59.
