Police are warning residents to beware of uninvited doorstep callers following a spate of burglaries.
Porcelain, silverware and furniture have been taken in break-ins over the past three weeks in the Steyning and Storrington areas, Sussex police say.
The force is warning residents to be vigilant if people knock on their doors asking if they have antiques for sale or would like anything valued.
The spokesman said: "Reputable firms will happily arrange appointments. Disreputable individuals want to look round your house and at your possessions, and they do their best to sound very plausible.
"If someone knocks at your door and gives you a spurious explanation when you open it, they may be looking for empty houses."
People who are concerned about potential burglars in their area should call the police on 0845 60 70 999.
