A woman died when a wheel fell off a moving lorry and hit her.
It happened on the B2102 at Cross-in-Hand, near Heathfield, at 9.35am on Friday.
The wheel of a Volvo tipper truck, heading towards Heathfield, came loose and knocked the 83-year-old over as she walked.
The woman, who has not yet been named, died instantly. Her male companion was slightly injured.
He and the truck driver, who suffered severe shock, were taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital for treatment.
Police closed the road for five hours while they investigated.
Officers said the truck had lost another wheel a mile before it reached Cross-in-Hand.
Sergeant Mark Armstrong of Polegate traffic police said: "The lady was very unfortunate indeed. Our sympathies go out to her family."
