Campaigners have asked for a relief road as part of a major review of a notorious West Sussex accident spot.
Thousands of people are taking part in the review into the A27 between Worthing and Lancing while the Government plans to spend £5 million on improvements.
The aim is to reduce congestion and improve safety.
Michael Parker, of South Road, Lancing, has written to the Highways Agency several times and says the only solution is to have a relief road.
He said: "There have been so many problems around here for the last 30 years which could be solved by building a new bypass but time and time again the scheme is scrapped.
"It is all very well carrying out yet another study but we have had loads of them and they come down to the same fact - there are too many cars using the road and not enough space for them."
Four studies have been carried out over the past 30 years and two proposed bypass schemes adopted but then abandoned.
The results of the Government's current survey are not expected until 2002.
London-based consultancy Steer Davies Gleave has sent out more than 50,000 leaflets and questionnaires to homes and businesses along the route.
It has also carried out traffic surveys at the Offington Corner and Grove Lodge roundabouts and the Lyons Farm junction at Broadwater, as well as investigating travel times along the A27 and the A259 coast road.
A spokesman said: "This is clearly an issue which a lot of people feel very strongly about and this is shown by the number of responses we are getting.
"We are currently in the process of sifting through the results and the next stage will be to pinpoint a variety of options for the area and eventually put them out to public consultation.
"There is still a very long way to go but we are hoping to have a full report by next March."
