A man is in hospital with serious head and neck injuries after a car mounted the pavement outside a row of shops and hit him.
Police believe the driver of the Ford Fiesta was reversing into a parking space outside the shopping parade in Selsey but lost control.
The accident happened at 8.20am yesterday in East Beach Road.
The injured man, who has not been identified, is 60 and is being treated in St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.
A police spokesman said: "It appears the driver of the Fiesta was manoeuvring into a parking space and caught the accelerator. The car bumped up the kerb and struck the pedestrian."
