Hundreds of people lined the streets as the new mayor of the Independent State of Cuckfield arrived to take up her post.

The village mayoral election is often described as the most crooked in the country, with candidates buying votes to get the post.

The winner was Tina Blackburn, who managed to raise £3,410, well ahead of her nearest rival who raised £540.

She rode through the streets in a donkey cart before being handed the keys to Cuckfield outside the Talbot pub.

She was followed by a procession of floats decorated by local groups.

All proceeds from the "election", which this year raised £3,963.86, will go to good causes in the village.

The Independent State of Cuckfield was established in 1966 to raise cash for charities, schools, groups and individuals.
