As the owner of a shop in St George's Road, Kemp Town, an area criticised by Sam Miguel as not having anything to offer (Opinion, October 20), I would like to enlighten him as to what we do offer. St George's Road has a comprehensive range of high quality shops, pubs featuring live music, restaurants and more. All these places are owner-run and offer excellent service.

The business community, the police, safety and community forums, Brighton and Hove Council and the Home Office are putting together a comprehensive package to improve the area. A safety corridor is being devised from St James's Street to St George's Road with extra policing, CCTV and improved lighting.

We are also asking for organisations to take more responsibility for their actions and impact on the community and are also setting up a care initiative involving shops keeping an eye on vulnerable people.

Kemp Town is an urban village built on social interaction and inclusion. We are all working to make Brighton a safer place, not by bullying tactics but with compassion and understanding.

I hope this will help ease Sam Miguel's anger and inspires him to become a helpful and informed member of the community. If not, maybe he could visit our local travel agency and consider going to destination more suited to the occasional visitor.
