Plans have been unveiled for a 150ft water jet on Worthing seafront.
It is hoped local businesses will pay for the feature, the cost of which has yet to be worked out.
It is hoped it will become a major tourist attraction.
Supporters it would be similar to the famous water jet which has become a big attraction at Lake Geneva in Switzerland.
Worthing Council leader Tim Dice said he was excited about the idea.
He said: "It is new and it is bold and it would delight tourists and locals."
The attraction could be placed out at sea, between the pier and Lido.
Andrew Garrett, chairman of the town's economic development and marketing committee, said: "Nothing will be decided unless it has the full backing of the town.
"Because it will be paid for from sponsorship from local businesses, we need to make sure everyone is supporting the idea.
"It is a very exciting idea but we are at a very early stage."
He added: "The last thing we want is an equivalent of the Millennium Dome. This is a much more modest idea but just as exciting for our town."
The project is currently being discussed by the Worthing First Progress Group. A decision on the plans will not be made until December.
