Hundreds of residents are being urged to have their say on traffic calming proposals for their village.

People living in Balcombe have got until November 10 to return a survey sent out by the parish council.

The council will then discuss the responses at its next meeting on November 16 before drawing up its final plans for consideration by West Sussex County Council.

Balcombe has suffered major traffic problems since the opening of the M23 Maidenbower slip road more than a year ago.

Southbound traffic heading for Haywards Heath which once came off the A23 at Cuckfield is now passing through Balcombe instead and residents say the road is unable to cope.

Local campaigner Stephen Coombs said: "The village has been a nightmare since the new road opened and it is clear that something needs to be done.

"There is no point waiting for an accident to happen before taking action. We can see for ourselves every day the risks people are taking to cross the road and the near misses there have been."

The county says the site is not an accident blackspot so installing traffic measures there is low on its list of priorities.

The bulk of any improvements is expected to be paid for by the parish council although the county has indicated it will contribute towards the expected £60,000 cost.

An exhibition and discussion about the plans are being held in the Victory Hall tomorrow from 9am to 12pm.
