A short break can sometimes add freshness to a relationship.
I was recently working abroad for a week with a group of people.
It was interesting to observe their varied reactions when returning home.
Some appreciated their loved ones even more, others seemed rather dissatisfied that the trip wasn't longer, having enjoyed a taste of freedom.
One had a sentimental anniversary card placed in her suitcase and another was greeted at the airport with a huge bunch of flowers.
An apparently infrequent event, and in both cases something of a surprise, but very welcome nonetheless.
One member of the group talked non-stop about her boyfriend during our outward journey.
But during this short spell away she realised she wasn't ready to settle down just yet.
Sometimes spending time apart can allow you the space to make that decision to part - or it may strengthen your attachment.
Are you prepared to put it to the test?
