The storms brought a nightmare for many West Sussex travellers as major and minor routes were closed by fallen trees and flying debris.
There was flooding at the junction of Cissbury Road and Broadwater Street West in Broadwater and on the busy A24 at Findon Valley.
There were also problems along the A259 coast road at Worthing after heavy winds blew a shingle and a fisherman's boat on to the road near Brooklands Park.
A fallen tree blocked the A281 at Henfield.
Traffic cones and boards at works on the A27 between Worthing and Sompting blew across the road, adding to delays.
Fire crews at Worthing were called to deal with loose tiles and flooding but no major incidents were reported.
Rail services were also badly disrupted after a tree came down on the track between Angmering and Worthing.
Schools were forced to close all over the county, from Shoreham to Lindfield to Pulborough.
The A284 between Littlehampton and Lyminster was closed by a fallen tree.
There was flooding at Sea Lane in Ferring, slowing traffic to a crawl.
