Storm damage has forced the closure of the £87 million Millennium Seed Bank exhibition only a few months after it opened.
Organisers hope to have the centre at Wakehurst Place, Ardingly, open later this week.
Strong winds blew in large windows at the public exhibition area, causing an estimated £80,000 of damage.
The nearby gardens were also shut yesterday after 15 trees were toppled and others became dangerous.
Wakehurst spokesman Trevor Butler said: "The damage to the windows created a vacuum, which meant some of the other large windows were pushed out by the sheer force of the wind.
"We had to close the gardens as a precaution because we could not have people walking about with some of the trees possibly in a precarious state."
It was hoped the garden might open today or tomorrow after the dangerous trees have been made safe.
