Torrential rain brought misery to motorists today and put residents in fear of flooding.

Rush hour drivers faced long delays on East Sussex roads this morning as the weather made conditions hazardous once again.

The A22 was badly hit, as were the A21 at Hastings and several smaller roads.

Emergency services reported a number of minor accidents. In the worst of them a car crashed into a ditch at Wartling, near Herstmonceux. On Tuesday a lorry crashed into the same ditch.

The car driver was not seriously injured but the road was closed for more than an hour.

Flood warnings were stepped up on the River Uck and the Rother.

People living in Uckfield and Robertsbridge were again keeping their fingers crossed the rivers would not burst their banks.

A spokesman for Uckfield fire station said: "At the moment it's very quiet but we're on standby in case of the worst."

Alfriston, near Eastbourne, was closed to traffic as parts of the village began to flood.

The Environment Agency warned of further heavy rainfall throughout today.
