A man was hit by a car and killed after kneeling down in the road.
A taxi driver slowed to avoid the victim but a car overtaking him struck the pedestrian.
A member of the public tried to resuscitate the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident happened on London Road, outside the Black Lion pub at Patcham, Brighton, last night.
The victim was a 61-year-old man who had been reported missing earlier from a residential care home in Hove.
He suffered from dementia. Police were withholding his name until relatives have been told.
The man was spotted kneeling in the southbound carriageway of London Road at about 11.35pm.
Police said the taxi driver saw him in time and slowed to a stop but was overtaken by a Nissan Sunny estate, which struck the man.
The Nissan driver, aged 69, suffered shock.
