The number of operations cancelled by a health trust has soared.

In the first six months of this year, the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton cancelled 235 operations, compared with 73 for the same period last year.

The figures will be discussed at a meeting of the Brighton Health Care NHS Trust, which manages the Royal Sussex, next Thursday.

Waiting lists are also higher than targets set by the trust, with 8,410 on the in-patient waiting list, against a target of 8,116.

The trust has overspent by £337,000, with extra staff pay accounting for the bulk of the deficit.

But, cash clawed back from road traffic accident victims helped reduce the overspend. New laws introduced last year allow hospitals to recover the costs of treating road accident victims from car insurance companies.
