A man is being treated in a neurological unit after being stabbed in the head during a late night incident in Littlehampton.
At one stage his injuries were said to be life threatening but last night he was described as being in a "serious but stable" condition after undergoing surgery.
The 21 year-old victim was attacked in the town's St Catherine's Road at midnight on Saturday and police believe that several people saw the incident which happened near the junction with South Terrace.
The man, who has not been named, also received knife wounds to his face and body and was taken to Worthing Hospital. He was later transferred to the Hurstwood Park neurological unit.
Detective Sergeant Gary Tutt said: "His injuries were considered life threatening at one stage but they are not now and he is in a serious but stable condition.
"This was a very nasty incident but as yet we do not know the full facts and want to hear from anyone who saw this happen because there were several people in the area at the time."
