Battle lines are being drawn in the fight to stop plans to build up to 1,000 homes on green land.
Posters and leaflets are being distributed throughout Willingdon by Liberal Democrats urging residents to oppose the proposals to build on land between Willingdon and Polegate.
The plans are part of Government proposals to build 300,000 homes in the South-East.
The Lib Dems say they accept the need for more homes but Polegate was not the place.
Councillor Chris Berry, a professional town planner and prospective parliamentary candidate for Eastbourne, said: "This is the last remaining stretch of real Sussex countryside along this part of the old A22.
"It is crucial to preserve the separate identities of Willingdon and Polegate. This campaign has huge support right across the community."
