Labour MP Des Turner is backing a £1 flat fare trial system on buses, which will be introduced in the New Year.
The Kemp Town MP was at Conway Street bus garage in Hove with Roger French, managing director of Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company to promote the new flat fare.
Dr Turner said: "This should encourage greater bus use. I hope many people make it a New Year resolution to travel by bus and take advantage of the cheaper fares.
"Many of my constituents in Peacehaven, Saltdean, Rottingdean and Woodingdean will find that this makes a real difference to their travel costs.
"Although I am concerned the price of short journeys will increase, overall, there's a lot of sense in having a flat-fare scheme."
The scheme is being introduced for a four-month trial from January 7.
The £1 flat fare will cover any Brighton and Hove Buses journey in the area between Shoreham and Newhaven.
