Daniel Stepney, from the Phoenix Club, chalked up his third successive victory in the Sussex Cross Country League this season over a slippery Stanmer Park course.

Daniel has stamped his authority on the under-13 age group this season and shown his adaptability.

Lancing in October was fast but not too hilly, but Brinsbury College in November was appalling with rain and mud.

At Stanmer, probably the toughest of the Sussex courses, there were hills and mud to overcome.

In all conditions, Daniel has reigned supreme and his latest 17-second victory over club-mate Rowan Jones was another impressive performance.

Danielle Christmas, from Crawley, also notched up her third successive victory of the season, finishing well clear of club-mate Hannah Brooks in the under-13 girls event.

In the under-15 boys event, Craig Ivemy from Hailsham crossed the line well clear of his rivals for the third time this season. But the race was declared void after several runners went off course. There is to be an inquiry and the result may be reinstated.

Winner Craig's placing is not in doubt, but the team race was affected and the inquiry may rule that the individual result stands but the team result is void.

The under-17 boys' race saw Joe Stephenson and Jack Vail, from the Brighton and Hove club, renew their rivalry.

Jack missed the first race at Lancing which Joe won. At Brinsbury, Jack, who is the reigning Sussex under-17 cross country champion, was a convincing winner with Joe back in third place behind Hailsham's Ben Warren.

In Stanmer Park, Joe was stronger in the closing stages to take victory with the Hailsham athlete in third.

In the under-17 girls' race, Kelly Gunn, from the Phoenix Club, who finished second at Lancing and third at Brinsbury, came into her own in Stanmer and finished clear of Crawley's Sam Webb, the winner at Lancing.
