Much has been done to ease the path of buses through the main part of Brighton and Hove, so that they provide an attractive regular and reliable service.
But every driver and passenger can tell tales of selfish motorists parking on double yellow lines and at bus stops in busy streets such as Western Road and North Street.
A special bus was laid on for an Argus reporter to see for himself what happens each day. Flagrant examples of bad parking delayed the bus and caused danger for pedestrians.
The lack of parking enforcement is costing Brighton and Hove Buses £500,000 a year through congestion costs, money which has to be passed on to passengers in high fares.
Stricter enforcement of parking regulations must be the way forward to stop this needless and illegal blocking of main roads.
Pure laziness and often downright stupidity by drivers is responsible for the congestion. Yet most of them get away with it most of the time.
That's why it is vital the council takes over control of parking regulations from the police as soon as possible. The council will employ more staff because it has the incentive of receiving money from all the fines.
This money will be ploughed back into better traffic management, benefiting all road users including motorists and bus passengers.
Everyone would be even more delighted if the fines income dwindled because motorists were freeing up the streets for everyone by parking properly.
