Rail operator Connex could abandon plans to introduce high-tech trains in Sussex.

The £200 million fleet of 240 coaches, which would cut journey times and increase passenger comfort, was to have been introduced on routes in the county next year.

But Connex has been stripped of the South Central franchise, covering most Sussex trains, and rival Govia will take over after 2003.

Only if the new operator buys them from Connex will they now see service here.

David Ewart, media relations manager for Connex, said: "If Govia don't take them off our hands we will use them elsewhere."

The trains were due to replace the old 'slam door' coaches used at the moment.

They have better acceleration, air-conditioning, carpets throughout, comfortable seats and full disabled access.

Govia is currently negotiating with Connex to take over the South Central franchise.

A spokesman for the company said: "We are in discussions at the moment and it is difficult to say if we will take on this rolling stock at this stage.

"It is a possibility because our aim is to provide a better service for passengers."
