Train operator Connex says passengers in Sussex should have no problems reaching their destinations over Christmas, despite cuts in services.

Unlike other rail operators in the country, the company is not taking advance bookings on services during the festive period.

A Connex spokesman said: "Judging from past experience, we believe we are running sufficient services for the number of people expected to be travelling.

"We can't predict the weather but the majority of speed restrictions have been lifted."

Rail passengers faced more delays this week after a landslide at Merstham in Surrey and flooding in the Patcham Tunnel, between Hassocks and Preston Park.

On Christmas Eve, Connex will operate a normal day-time service but trains will stop running at 10pm. There are no services on Christmas Day.

There will be hourly services between Brighton and London on Boxing Day with additional stops at Selhurst for a football match.

Between December 27 and 29 there will be a Saturday service with extra trains at peak times.

On New Year's Eve there will be a normal Sunday service and on New Year's Day there will be a Sunday service with some additional trains.

Brighton and Hove Bus Company is laying on extra midnight services on New Year's Eve to transport revellers to and from the town centre until about 3am.

There will be a Sunday service during the day, increasing to a Saturday evening service from 7pm.

A flat fare of £3 applies to all late-night services on New Year's Eve and there will be a £5 saver ticket for all routes.

On Christmas Eve, there will be a normal Sunday service until 10pm but there will be no buses running on Christmas Day.

A street party on New Year's Eve will result in parts of Brighton city centre being closed to traffic. Roads around the Old Steine and Victoria Gardens will be shut from 5pm until 4am the following day.

Grand Junction will be closed between West Street and Lower Rock Gardens from 10pm until the early hours and Madeira Drive will be closed from 6am on New Year's Eve until 6am the next morning.
