A dazed driver was killed when he climbed from his crashed car and staggered in front of traffic on a busy dual carriageway.
Other motorists swerved to miss Stephen Lawson, 37, as he crossed the A23 just outside Brighton.
But the driver of a Ford Fiesta heading into the city was unable to avoid Mr Lawson, of Mill Hill, Shoreham.
Other motorists tried to resuscitate him but he died from his injuries at the scene.
A police spokeswoman said: "We understand Mr Lawson was on the southbound carriageway driving towards Brighton.
"His red BMW convertible left the road and crashed into a field.
"It appears he left the vehicle and tried to cross the carriageway when he was hit by a car.
"Mr Lawson died from his injuries at the scene. The driver of the Fiesta, a 51-year-old Brighton man, suffered shock."
Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 9.22pm on Saturday, to call them on 0845 6070999.
