A husband and wife were injured when a hit-and-run driver mounted the pavement.
The couple were walking their dog near the A264 at Crawley Down on Saturday at 10.20pm when the Renault hit them.
The 51-year-old wife suffered serious abdominal injuries, shock and bruising. Her 55-year-old husband had a broken arm and bruising.
Both were taken to East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. The wife was discharged on Christmas Eve but the husband had an operation on Christmas Day.
A police spokeswoman said: "This was an horrific accident which left two people seriously injured.
"If the person who did this is not willing to come forward we are appealing to any friends or relatives who know what happened to come forward."
The car lost an offside wing mirror at the scene and police are appealing to garages asked to repair a damaged Renault or to supply a new wing mirror to get in touch.
The victims were not named by Sussex Police, who operate data protection guidelines.
