A woman bailed in connection with the death of a two-year-old boy was forced onto the roof or her home to escape an angry mob.

The 21-year-old woman had to be rescued from the roof of her Church Road flat in St Leonards, East Sussex, in the early hours when the gang of men and women shouted abuse at her from the street.

She and a 25-year-old man are on police bail over the discovery of a boy found dead in his cot on Thursday.

The child had been dead for two weeks before being found by police, who had received a tip off. His body had decomposed during the Christmas period.

Police are treating the death as suspicious but the couple have not been charged.

Officers were back at the scene today to disperse a group outside the flat.

A 26-year-old local man was later arrested and charged with public order offences.

Insp Steve Brookman, of Sussex Police, said: "It seems there was a disturbance in the road and the woman felt she needed to get away from it by climbing onto the roof. The woman was rescued safely."

The couple have been released on bail until February 12 when they are due back at Hastings police station.

A post mortem examination on the boy proved inconclusive. Further tests are now being carried out.
