Although in the past I have had occasion to criticise the police, I find Cameron Ellis' letter of December 19 totally unjustified.
On the night of December 12, I had to make a journey to Copthorne and back. I chose to use the old Balcombe Roadbecause I knew just how dangerous the A23 was likely to be - not because of the weather but because of the other road users.
Conditions on that night were so bad any normal person would realise flooding was more or less certain, without needing to be told by the police or anyone else.
At Balcombe, I was able to look down on the chaos Cameron Ellis was stuck in. That mess was not caused by lack of police action. It was caused because too many motorists were either too stupid or ignorant to slow down and adjust their speed to match the conditions.
