Royal glove maker Cornelia James has applied for planning permission to build five homes at its factory in Brighton.

The company, which lists the Queen and the Princess Royal among its clients, has applied for planning permission to convert its Havelock Road works into five homes.

Manager Andrew Lawson said the company needed to find new premises but it would not move out of Brighton and Hove.

He said: "We are going to move because the building is no longer suitable for what we do, it is quite an old building and is in a residential area."

He said the company had identified alternative sites at Lewes Road, Hollingbury, and the old Goldstone football ground but no decision had been taken. The company was founded in the Forties by Cornelia James, who died in 1999. It now makes 10,000 pairs of gloves a year, as well as hats and other fashion accessories.

Customers also include actresses Glenn Close and Nicole Kidman.
