Asda is to create a number of new jobs at its Hollingbury superstore under ambitious modernisation plans.

The Hollingbury store will have a 10,000 sq. ft. extension as part of a £450 million nationwide investment programme in 2001.

The supermarket group, which was bought by US giant Wal-Mart in 1999 wants to refurbish a quarter of its existing stores. The group will also build another 13 stores - including the first Asda Wal-Mart supercentre, at Swindon.

Asda expects to create a total of 5,000 new jobs across the UK under its expansion this year. The supermarket giant announced last year plans to create 27,000 new jobs by 2005.

Chief operating officer Paul Mason said: "This record level of investment by Wal-Mart in the UK is in line with our strategy of long term market share growth and good news for British customers, who know that when Wal-Mart comes to town prices come down and stay down."

This morning's announcement fleshes out plans unveiled by the group in October. None of Asda's other Sussex stores are to be modernised.
