Valerie Sutton is expected to become Worthing's 85th Mayor.
Worthing councillors are likely to approve her appointment at a full council meeting next Thursday (jan 11).
Coun Sutton was born and has lived most of her life in Worthing.
She has been a borough councillor for 11 years, representing both Durrington and Salvington wards.
During that time Mrs Sutton has served on many of the council's committees and is currently planning committee chairman.
Her consort is expected to be Honorary Alderman Stanley Moore, a former councillor and mayor of Worthing.
Mrs Sutton said: "I am both delighted and honoured to have been selected by my fellow councillors for recommendation for appointment to this historic office.
"I know that the mayoral tradition in Worthing is very strong and I will use my very best endeavours to uphold this tradition for the people of Worthing."
Mrs Sutton is expected to be formally appointed in May, when she will take over from current mayor Ann Lynn.
