I am heartily sick and tired of the constant criticism levied at our local councils concerning the salting of the highways.

When will people realise that weather prediction is not a precise science. During the recent cold snap, the gritter lorries were out working when most of the whinging public were warmly tucked up in their beds.

The salt had been laid but washed away by rain. Immediately after this there was a heavy fall of snow leaving no time to re salt.

My husband and I work for the local authority highways department. Many of us there work extra hours during difficult and unforeseen weather conditions without a break and receive no monetary reward or time off in lieu.

I believe we should all share the burden of responsibility in difficult conditions. If your journey is not essential do not go out. If it is take reasonable precautions and drive carefully.
