Great work is being achieved in taking people off the streets of Brighton and Hove thanks to the rough sleepers initiative.

But it is being seriously undermined by the situation we reveal today, about what happened at Amber Court in Brighton.

Amber Court is a block of flats where homeless people can regain independence before going back to a normal life.

They live in self-contained flats but have access to support when they need it.

What happened was that drug dealers started to target tenants and security guards had to be employed to get rid of them.

Drugs are big business in Brighton and Hove. There are plenty of other homes where dealing is going on and some of them are council houses.

What makes this case particularly shocking is that the tenants involved are vulnerable.

They have all recently come off the streets where they have been at rock bottom. The last thing they need, particularly those who have had an addiction problem, is for dealers to operate from their premises.

Drug dealing appears to have gone away from Amber Court. But there are other similar schemes where it is still rife.

The police usually know only too well what is going on. What they need is the evidence to catch the dealers before they can wreck more young people's lives.
