Boat owners along the Sussex coastline are being urged to act as lookouts to help catch drug smugglers.

Customs officials have issued new guidelines for yacht and motor boat enthusiasts who they say are in an ideal position to spot suspicious behaviour.

In the past four years, members of the public on the South and West Coast have provided information to Customs that has resulted in the seizure of more than £23 million of drugs.

Boat owners are asked to take note of vessels in remote areas or operating at night without lights, packages being unloaded in unusual areas, ships signalling ashore or being met by smaller craft and aircraft dropping packages or touching down in fields.

The information can be reported to Customs on freephone 0800 595000.
