People in Stonery Road, Portslade, persuaded councillors to have the lights changed in the flats opposite their homes.
Now security lights no longer shine into their houses and they also don't light up the skies above.
Residents are now to receive an award from the British Astronomical Association's Campaign for Dark Skies headed by Sir Patrick Moore.
Sir Patrick thinks the residents are real stars because they made Brighton and Hove Council see the light.
