A family is putting forward a 13-year-old boy for a bravery commendation after he saved their son from drowning.

Adam Knight plunged into an ice-cold swimming pool to pluck five-year-old George Christensen to safety.

The boys were sharing the holiday of a lifetime with their families in a villa in Florida when little George wandered out of sight and tragedy almost struck.

Adam looked up from his seat in the lounge to see George struggling in the deep end of the pool.

The cool youngster dived in fully-clothed and plucked George to safety.

George's mother Louise, of Potters Lane, Burgess Hill, said: "I am making inquiries to put Adam forward for some kind of children's bravery award. I can't put into words how I feel about what he did.

"He didn't even stop to tell us what he was doing. Without a murmur he went straight in the water and the next thing we saw him looking after George at the edge of the pool.

"George is an over-confident little boy and he doesn't feel fear at all. He slipped on some wet tiles and fell in.

"Adam was very blas about the whole thing but I think he deserves some recognition for what he did.

"I honestly believe George would have drowned if it hadn't been for Adam. He was absolutely wonderful."

George suffered some shock but the families were able to continue the holiday.

Adam, of Chanctonbury Road in Burgess Hill, said he was sitting indoors when he saw George struggling.

He said: "I saw lots of water going everywhere. George was going up and down, splashing about. The water was freezing. It was so cold it made my feet ache."
