A campaign has been launched to raise £500,000 to refurbish a church in central Brighton.

Worshippers at Gloucester Place Baptist Church have already raised £60,000.

Now they hope fund-raisers, charitable trusts and people with past connections to the church will help.

The money will pay for repairs to the stained glass windows, ceiling and wall plaster in the worship area and hall.

There are also plans to replace the pews with movable seating. The steps and railings at the front of the building will be removed and the main entrance brought to pavement level.

Carol Virgo, church secretary, said: "It would be wonderful if this could be achieved and the work completed by the 100th anniversary of the church building and fellowship in 2004."

A brochure with details of the appeal can be obtained from the church or by contacting Carol on 01273 885889.
