He is revered by Albion fans for making all the right noises in front of the goal after scoring 19 times already this season.

His sharp-shooting has led to him achieving cult status in the stands at Withdean and triggered the attentions of a string of clubs who are chasing his signature.

Now the shaven-headed Bobby Zamora is making music off the pitch after a local band renamed themselves after him.

The Brighton band has changed its name from Jaded to The Zamora in the hope they can emulate his feat of topping the Division Three goal-scoring charts by taking the pop charts by storm.

The move means 20-year-old Zamora is in exclusive company - only rarely are bands after footballers. Brazilian soccer legend Pele is one of the few others.

The quintet decided on The Zamora after attending Albion matches and realising the ring in his name had captured the crowd's imagination with chants such as "When the ball hit the net, once more you can bet, it's Zamora" to the tune of the Dean Martin classic That's Amore.

Yesterday the band met up with the striker at the training ground at Sussex University for the first time.

Bobby is over the moon at having a band named after him and has promised to come along to one of their gigs with fellow players.

Vocalist Dom Pates said: "He was overjoyed we had named the band after him. He was very interested in what we were doing, although I don't think we play his style of music.

"We had great fun at the photo session and it was good to meet the person who had given the band its name.

"We hope to have a chant of Zamora on the first track of our first album."

Dom added: "Bobby is more into rhythm and blues and dance music than our rock. We gave him one of our CDs and we hope that will bring him round."

Zamora is one of the brightest prospects in the lower league and has already attracted interest from Third Division promotion-chasers Cardiff City.

The Welsh club tabled a £1.2 million bid for the striker but it was turned down.
