Detectives are treating a shooting as attempted murder after Crawley residents were woken by gunfire yesterday.

They arrested a 27-year-old from Crawley after a shot was fired in the Springfield Road area shortly before 1am.

A man in his 20s, who was in a Mitsubishi Shogun parked in Yew Court, was treated for minor cuts to his face at the New East Surrey Hospital. He was injured by flying glass.

A woman in her late teens, who was also in the car, was uninjured.

Police say a blue Ford saloon, possibly a Sierra or Sapphire, is thought to have driven away from the scene shortly after the shooting.

Yew Court is a modern block of flats overlooking the main railway line. Bette Howick, of neighbouring Springfield Court, said the gunshot woke her 49-year-old daughter.

She said: "She heard a bang but didn't get up to investigate."

Anybody with information should contact Detective Sergeant Michael Beard of Crawley police on 0845 6070999.

The man who was arrested has been released on police bail pending further inquiries and is due to return to the police station in two weeks.
