I also have memories of Preston Barracks. I and my twin brother used to visit once a week to watch the horses being groomed and shod.
I had an elder brother, Ronald (Dusty) Crossfield, who was stationed there. We were invited to look around; the horses were for pulling the gun carriages and limbers of the Royal Horse Artillery. They were often taken for exercise from the barracks to the seafront for a swim in the sea. People loved to see them galloping along.
Another friend of my brother, Tom Whelan, was also stationed at Preston Barracks. They both finished up in the SAS and Airborne Regiment.
Mr Whelan still lives in Hove after long service in the army.
