A baby and a man needed hospital treatment after a car was involved in a succession of smashes, damaging six other vehicles and a bus stop.

The driver was heading east along Seaside in Eastbourne at noon yesterday when his white Nissan hit a lamp post.

It went on to collide with a recovery truck and another car, which caused three others to shunt into each other.

His vehicle then span across the road and crashed into a bus stop near the junction with Windermere Crescent.

The driver, believed to have been a man in his 30s had to be freed from the wreckage by firefighters.

He was taken by ambulance to Eastbourne District General Hospital suffering from serious head injuries and was last night in a stable condition.

A baby thought to have been in one of the other cars was also taken to hospital.

Police investigating the crash closed Seaside for two-and-a-half hours. They are appealing for witnesses to call PC Rideout on 0845 6070999.
