Once again the Whitehawk Camp has been the subject of vandalism. Recently, a group of cyclo-cross enthusiasts set up a course around the ramparts of the camp.
The Whitehawk Camp is a scheduled ancient monument and, as such, is protected by law.
It is a unique site dating back to about 4500BC, created during the late Stone Age or Neolithic period, and a place of national importance.
The area around the camp has been designated a nature reserve and members of the Friends of Whitehawk Hill and a downland ranger tried to persuade the participants to desist.
It was only after the police had been called that they packed up and left. To desecrate this monument is a criminal offence.
The monument is being cared for under the auspices of the local nature group. People of Brighton wishing to learn more about their ancient roots and heritage can join a walk around the camp on June 6 at 7.30pm, where perhaps a greater understanding of the precious archaeological site we have at Whitehawk Camp will be appreciated.
